Kenneth K. Brown PhD

The symbol of my teenage science club looked like the logo to the left. We called ourselves the Electromagnetic Researches and met on Saturdays to share our current science projects. My parents supported my interest in science by converting the garage into a laboratory. I grew up doing science.

In 1988 I moved to Cincinnati to take a career position with NIOSH, I had a set of twin boys at the time and was sharing with a colleague of mine, Dr. Peter Shaw, how much having a science club influenced my career development. I love my work and endured the hard work of graduate school so that I could do science as a career. I told Peter that I wished my sons could have that science club experience and find inspirational awe and wonder in doing science.

Peter said, "have you ever heard about the Super Saturday Program that his wife taught for because it was like a science club for children." I have been teaching science for the program to this day.

CAREER OBJECTIVE

I am now developing direct reading instrumental analytical chemistry method to detect and measure hazardous chemicals in occupational environments. I have taught college chemistry at the University of Cincinnati for 20 years, gifted children in the Super Saturday Program for 22 years, and am still developing, teaching, and writing educational experiments for children. I am a research team leader and embrace many of the management philosophies of the late Steven Covey toward being a highly effective person.

EDUCATION

2012 BSEET, Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Technology from the University of Cincinnati – College of Applied Science.

1988 Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Sciences with Health and Environmental Chemistry Specialization from Oakland University in Michigan with a dissertation titled “Trace Level Analysis of Environmental Organotin Residues Using Liquid Chromatography" under supervision of Professor Paul Tomboulian.

1984 M.S. degree in Analytical Chemistry with Chromatography Specialization from Wayne State University in Michigan with a thesis titled "The Determination of 1-Nitropyrene in Diesel Exhaust using HPTLC" under supervision of Professor Colin Poole.

1981 B.S degree in Chemistry with ACS certification from Wayne State University in Michigan with senior research paper titled "Micro- electrodes for Electrochemical Determination of Cadmium" under supervision of Professor Ronald R. Schroeder.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE - 38 YEARS

1988 - present Research Chemist, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Cincinnati, Ohio

Currently working as Project Officer, Research Chemist, and Acting Team Leader. As Project officer, wrote, won funding, and managing the research project titled "Chemical Exposure Monitor for Indoor Positioning" while also managing the inherited project titled Analytical Method Development for Emerging Problems. As Research Chemist, developing GC-MS analytical methods for the Diacetyl Exposure Assessment Research Study and manage a GC-MS analytical chemistry instrument laboratory. As Acting Team Leader, conducting weekly team meetings, providing performance, attendance, and purchasing supervision for the Worker Surveillance Focused Research Team.

Historically as a NIOSH Research Chemist, developed novel chemical exposure analytical chemistry methods, assessed worker exposures to complex chemical mixtures such as metalworking fluids, presented discoveries at International symposiums, and published results in scientific journals. Provided leadership for NIOSH's Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry Services Contract in the role of Alternate Project Officer. Collaborated and conducted research with the NIOSH dermal exposure research team. For over 10 years, developed biological montoring methods for worker exposure assessment. Supervised the development of a biomonitoring method for glycol ether exposure. Worked with the pesticide exposure team of 12 and developed a bio-monitoring method for the pesticide, 2,4-D, applying the method to a large no-till herbicide applicator study. Trained and supervised technicians, while managing funds allocated for these biomonitoring projects procuring laboratory instruments and supplies. Created biomonitoring analytical methods for aromatic amines and sodium azide and discovered aromatic amine carcinogenic exposure in tire and rubber plant workers. Mentored and trained college students as interns in research projects.

1983 – 88 Chemist, US Food and Drug Administration, Detroit, Michigan

Researched and developed analytical chemistry methods for measuring organo-tin fungicides in food products using HPTLC and HPLC (liquid chromatography techniques) with fluorescence detection while working for the US Food and Drug Administration and attending Oakland University.

1981 - 82 Teaching Assistant, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan

Taught Honor's General Chemistry and Instrumental Chemical Analysis classes for Professors Endicott and Schroeder while working toward a Master's degree at Wayne State University.

1978 - 1980 Chemical Analyst, Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, Michigan

Chemically analyzed and certified in-house secondary gas standards against the National Bureau of Standards for use in automobile exhaust testing to EPA requirements certifying automobile lines for sales. Also, provided chemical analysis on standard gasoline fuels used in FORD’s certification vehicles.

1976 - 1978 Analytical Chemist, Detroit Testing Laboratory, Oak Park, Michigan

Chemically analyzed water, air, food, petroleum, and plastics using classical instrumental and wet chemistry methods providing data reports for private sector customers.

1976 - 1976 Analytical Chemist, Schrader Analytical, Detroit, Michigan.

Chemically analyzed solids, liquids, and gases (unknown samples) by gas chromatography for gas chromatography mass spectroscopy. Also, managed quality control and new product testing for research and development of petroleum products for the parent company, Schrader Inc.

1973 - 1975 Research Technician, Energy Development Assocs., Madison Heights, Michigan. Ceased business operations in 1984

Chemically analyzed electrolytes and gaseous emissions by atomic absorption spectrometry and gas chromatography for the research and development of storage batteries.

1970 - 1973 Quality Control Technician, Marathon Oil Refinery, Detroit, Michigan.

Chemically analyzed the entire line of refinery products from methane to asphalts using American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) methods for the quality control and release of their petroleum products to the public for sale.

1969 - 1970 Biochemical Technician, Difco Laboratories, Detroit, Michigan.

Biochemically extracted and purified natural products like lecithin, phytohemaglutin, and cardiolipin, for use in Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test (VDRL) antigens and tissue cultures. Dr. Leland Pence passed away October 30, 2001.
